How to Clean & Care for Your Dildo: Silicone, Waterproofing & Lube Compatibility
Good care keeps a body-safe toy hygienic and lasting for years. This guide covers cleaning step by step, what "waterproof" really means, safe storage, and which lubes you can and can't use.
Cleaning, step by step
- Rinse with warm water before and after every use.
- Wash with mild, unscented soap or a dedicated toy cleaner. Pay attention to textured areas, veins, and the base.
- Rinse thoroughly — soap residue can cause irritation.
- Pat dry with a clean, lint-free towel and let it air-dry fully before storing.
Silicone vs porous materials
100% silicone is non-porous, so bacteria can't soak in — it's easy to keep truly clean and is the gold standard. Porous materials (TPR, PVC, "jelly") can harbour bacteria; use a condom over them and replace them more often. This is a big reason we recommend silicone for every realistic toy.
Can you sterilise it?
100% silicone toys without electronics or a motor can be boiled for a few minutes or run on the top rack of a dishwasher (no soap). Never boil any toy that vibrates, thrusts, or has a battery — wipe those with a damp cloth and toy cleaner instead.
Waterproof vs splashproof
Solid (non-motorised) silicone toys are fully waterproof and fine for the shower or bath. Motorised toys vary: "splashproof" means you can rinse it, but don't submerge it; "fully waterproof" (look for an IPX7 rating) means it can go underwater. Check the product page before taking any powered toy into the shower.
Lube compatibility
- Water-based lube — safe with every material, including silicone. Always the default choice. Reapply as it dries.
- Silicone-based lube — long-lasting and great in water, but it can degrade silicone toys over time. Avoid it on silicone, or test on the base first.
- Oil-based lube — avoid with toys and condoms.
Storage
Store fully dry, in a cool spot, ideally in a cloth bag. Keep silicone toys from pressing against each other long-term, as some materials can react on contact.
