Silicone vs TPE Sex Toys: Safety, Feel, and How to Tell Them Apart

The short answer

Platinum silicone is non-porous and the safer choice; TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) is porous and needs more care. Both can feel soft and lifelike, but they behave very differently once you own them.

Side-by-side comparison

  • Porosity: Silicone is non-porous; TPE is porous and can trap bacteria in micro-pores.
  • Cleaning: Silicone can be fully sanitised (soap and water, or boiling if solid). TPE can only be surface-cleaned — use a condom for shared or anal use.
  • Lubricant: Both work best with water-based lube. Avoid silicone lube on silicone; oil-based lube can degrade TPE.
  • Feel: TPE is often slightly softer and squishier; high-quality dual-density silicone closely mimics it while staying hygienic.
  • Durability: Silicone lasts for years; TPE tends to degrade faster and may become tacky over time.
  • Price: TPE is usually cheaper, which is its main advantage.

How to tell them apart

If a product lists "100% silicone" or "platinum silicone", trust the label. TPE/TPR products are often marketed as "realistic", "jelly", or simply left vague. A strong chemical smell out of the box is a red flag for low-grade TPE.

Which should you buy?

For anything used internally, shared between partners, or that you want to keep for years, choose body-safe silicone. TPE can be a reasonable budget option for solo, external use as long as you clean it carefully and pair it with a condom when needed.

Care recap

Whichever you choose: wash before and after every use, use water-based lube, dry fully, and store separately. You can check the exact material of any item in the Specifications table on its product page.
