What Nobody Tells You About Bringing a Strap-On Into the Bedroom
We talked about it for roughly six months before either of us actually added anything to a cart. That, it turns out, was the most useful part — not the shopping, the talking. So if you and your partner are circling the idea of a strap-on, here's the stuff the product pages don't mention.
The conversation does more work than the toy
Decide together what this is for — curiosity, a specific fantasy, working around erectile difficulty — because the answer changes what you buy. Two people who've actually said the awkward sentences out loud have a far better first time than two people who bought the biggest thing on the page and hoped. If you want a structured starting point, our guide for couples walks through it without the fluff.
Buy smaller than you'd guess
The person wearing it can't feel depth, which makes it dangerously easy to thrust too far, too fast. Start around 6–7" insertable with a moderate width. Something like the Owen 6" or the Beck 7.2" strap-shorts set is plenty for a first run. You can always size up later; you can't un-scare someone.
Harness, or no harness?
If you go the harness route, the toy needs a flat flared base that locks into the O-ring — not every dildo qualifies, and the ring has to match the base, not the shaft. We spelled all of that out in the strap-on & harness guide. Browse ready-to-go sets in the strap-on collection if you'd rather skip the mix-and-match.
If erectile difficulty is part of the picture
A hollow strap-on is worn over the body and adds length or girth without a full harness rig. It's one of the least-talked-about, most-appreciated options we sell — see the wearable hollow strap-on or the wider penis sleeve range.
The unglamorous ending
Use a lot of water-based lube, go slow, check in out loud, and clean everything properly afterwards (here's how). None of that is sexy to write down. All of it is what makes couple number two want a second night instead of quietly returning the box. If you're brand new to toys in general, my first-timer notes are worth a skim too.
